Inferences on upward leader characteristics from measured currents

چکیده
We analyzed in detail currents associated with upward unconnected leaders (UULs) initiated from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Industrial Area Tower (IAT). Current measurements of UULs natural lightning are relatively rare and provide important insights into development propagation leaders. Eight were KSC-IAT between August 1, 2018 November 15, 2019. All positive as they occurred response to downward negative that attached ground near tower. The KSC Mesoscale Eastern Range Lightning Information System (MERLIN) located these nearby strokes at distances ranging 185 783 m tower, median being 538 m. peak current for ranged 13 69.3 kA, 26.7 kA. From perspective charge transferred, can be considered a bipolar phenomenon; transferred inception their current-polarity reversal, following which, effectively ground. labeled former time-period UUL phase latter collapse phase. duration 789 μs − 6.4 mC, respectively, 388 4.7 respectively. Overall, net by was negative. During phase, UUL-currents consisted faster (total durations order 10 μs) impulses overlaid on slower (millisecond-scale) “background” current. background-to-peak current-pulse amplitudes 3.4–289.2 A 30.1 A. pulse total full-width half-maximum (FWHM) 14.1 4.9 μs, 10-to-90% risetimes 3.2 2.0 Interpulse intervals 4.2–132.8 20 μs. Generally speaking, larger, background higher, interpulse shorter later times during UULs. It is likely higher more closely approached leader branch versus lower-current

Measuring Waves and Currents with an Upward-Looking ADCP
Routine monitoring of waves and currents in the nearshore region is of great interest both scientifically and to the general public because of their role in coastline erosion and their impact on recreational activities. Historically, the technology for measuring these quantitites has been distinct, requiring separate instrumentation for each. In this contribution we show that it is possible in ...
متن کاملLightning strikes to tall objects: Currents inferred from far electromagnetic fields versus directly measured currents
[1] We have derived far-field-to-current conversion factors for lightning strikes to tall objects for (1) the initial peak current at the object top, (2) the largest peak current at the object top, and (3) the peak current at the object bottom. These far-field-to-current conversion factors are needed for proper interpretation of peak currents reported by lightning detection networks and are eac...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Video Recordings of an Aborted Upward Leader at Daytime from a “Bolt-from-the-Blue” Discharge
In this paper we present the joint analysis of an unconnected upward leader serendipitously recorded by two digital cameras at daytime at a close distance of 7-9 m. Time resolved lightning emissions in the very high frequency (VHF) band located by the New Mexico Tech Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) indicate that this leader was triggered by the negative stepped leader of a “bolt-from-the-blue” li...

متن کاملOn the estimation of lightning peak currents from measured fields using lightning location systems
Although, due to the high variability of key parameters such as the return-stroke speed, it is impossible to determine the lightning current accurately from the remotely measured electric or magnetic field for a given event, we show in this paper that, for an assumed return-stroke model, the statistical estimation (e.g. in terms of mean values and standard deviations) is possible. We show addit...
